The majority of persons bearing the
surname of the highland Clan
Maclennan evolved from a core gene
pool, originating in Glenelg and Kintail.
Certain families preferred to retain or
change their name, such as the
MacKerlichs of Glenelchaig and the
Clerks of Lochbroom. there is
compelling evidence that
Lobban/Loban are of the same gene
pool. The variation of in spelling of
Maclennan is a direct result of the
anglicization of gaelic Macghill’innein,
as well as, misunderstanding of the
contractions of Mac to M’ , Mc and McC.
Similarly, some Lobans of easter Ross
have become Logan. In this light, there
were no septs of Clan Maclennan.
Interestingly, there is evidence that a
persecuted clan in Lewis changed their
name to Maclennan and Campbell.
